Rahna Reiko Rizzuto, experimental motherhood, chapbook reading period, chronic lurchers, Ally Harris, Johannes Goransson, Traci O. Connor, eating babies, etc

Today's post does not necessarily reflect the views of Tarpaulin Sky Press authors or staff, with the exception of TSky Press publisher, Christian Peet.

That said, and switching now to the first-person while noting the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day, I'd like to dedicate this post to one particular woman, my friend Rahna Reiko Rizzuto, whose (small(ish)-press!) memoir, Hiroshima in the Morning, is a National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist this year.

Sadly, Reiko's book, the book's nomination, and indeed most of the book's content has been overshadowed by media attention to one particular element of Reiko's story: how she's raised her children. Though slightly more balanced in a recent appearance on The Gayle King Show, Reiko's recent appearances on The Today Show and in articles at Salon and Shine have spawned a "discussion" (attack) that focuses solely on Reiko's "unorthodox" parenting of her two boys--boys who, in a recent visit to my house, seemed blissfully unaware of the suffering that some 15, 000 people at Shine alone desperately want to believe they have endured as a result of Reiko not only leaving them with Dad for six months(!), once(!), on a research grant(!), but also moving down the street from them(!), rather than in their home with her ex-husband(!)

Chronic Content: Poems by Andrea Kneeland

Halloween comes early and stays all month at Tarpaulin Sky, especially in the "Chronic Content" section. Thanks to Andrea Kneeland, we have some rather disturbing "Home Movies" (O, aren't they all!) and even "Drafts," now onscreen or under glass, like so many greasy bits of celluloid evidence. . . .

the way flesh swarms like ants the stuttering thumps embedded
like morse in our bones forever a history of fingers glistening
like butter the way memory is sort of a stain
in the cloth

like grease or like blood forever there you are unbleached
how you let them touch you forever your breasts fleshed guppyfish
eyes straining toward opposite points in the air forever the arch
of your skin. . .

Chronic Content: Poems by Dot Devota

Today's chronic content features new work by Dot Devota: "BlackWriting."
Preparation for brutality of course
is not an exaggeration, but silence the only master
capable of beating its fodder
into bursting submission.

Follow this, the master says, eat this.

Chronic Content: New Work by Mark Cunningham

"The media’s interest in cyanide-laced Tylenol pills after all these years is giving me a headache. Call it 'poetry of witness' if you want, but you’re still a fink about me taking the last donut at the business meeting. "

Chronic Content: New Work by Richard Froude

Richard Froude's FABRIC is a burial shroud and thread-map in service to forensic anthropology, and we've just entered a sizable swath into evidence at Tarpaulin Sky:

In May 2003, I drove into the mountains with a friend, a retired army Colonel, and a minor broadcast personality, to discharge firearms in the Roosevelt National Forest. We ate cold grilled chicken from zip loc bags and drank cans of non-alcoholic lager. I carried a .357 Magnum in a holster, the chicken in my hands and a twelve gauge shotgun strapped across my back.

The Colonel provided the weapons, my friend purchased 500 rounds of ammunition, the media personality brought a single handgun (wrapped in a red handkerchief) and drove us in a pale blue SUV.

What did I bring to the occasion?

A willingness to participate. A foil for the Americans. A canvas on which they would illustrate the things they most valued.

Chronic Content: New Poems by Carol Guess

"Inside every departure is a tangled roadside death," and inside the inaugural installment of Tarpaulin Sky's newfangled feature, Chronic Content, are new prose poems from Carol Guess, whose Index of Placebo Effects promises, "You'll get well faster because of what you see: criminals and geese among the restless trees."
